The Oxford Dictionary Pro characterized myths as false traditional stories that are perceived as truth (2012). In 2010, Lilienfield published a book outlining some of the myths that are prevalent in modern society. Some of the myths are, astrology predicts people’s personality traits more accurately than not, positive self declarations are good ways to construct self-worth and people’s handwriting reveal their innate personality characteristics (Lilienfeld, 2010, p. 175-179). Research based evidence using methods that are valid, reliable and duplicable provide documentation opposing mythological theories concerning the connection between personality traits, astrology, graphology and self-affirmation (Lilienfeld, 2010; Stanovich, 2013). In 2009, Napper et al. published a study that focused on testing the â€Å"self-affirmation manipulation† (p. 45). â€Å"Self-affirmation theory† defines issues or situations that present themselves in a way that causes someone to question and ultimately prove their sense of self worth (Napper et al., 2009, p. 45). The Death Of The State Of Tennessee After Memphis Essay

According to FBI 2010 UCR report, there was fifty-five homicide death reported, it’s second highest in the state of Tennessee after Memphis. Losing someone who we loved through homicide would be one of the most shocking experience, In my life period I haven’t experienced any homicide which includes my loved ones, I come from the peaceful neighborhood, since I was the child I grew up in a peaceful environment, there was low violence but minor, dangerous weapons such as guns, biological weapon or even swords were rare. The countries above this region are considered to be part of the Arab world, while Sub-Saharan Africa is referred to as the â€Å"black countries†. These countries include Angola, Botswana, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Somalia, and Zimbabwe (Avert 2010). With Africa consisting of so many third-world nations in which education is considered a luxury that is available to only a small percentage of the population, it is no wonder why HIV has become such a widespread epidemic. Back in 2008, approximately 22.4 million children and adults were reported as living with HIV, and an estimated 1.4 million African people actually died from AIDS (Avert 2010). What is worse, is that more than 14 million African children have lost at least one parent to AIDS, and many do not have any other living relatives. This is why there are so many children living in orphanages; and many of them, unfortunately, were born carrying the HIV virus. According to UNAIDS, a Joint United Nations Program for HIV and AIDS, â€Å"Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most heavily affected by HIV. In 2008, sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 67% of HIV infections worldwide, 68% of new HIV infections among adults and 91% of new HIV infections among children. The region also accounted for 72% of the world’s AIDS-related deaths in 2008† (UNAIDS 2010). These statistics demonstrate how extreme the HIV and AIDS situation is throughout the African continent. It is especially unfortunate how many children are infected with HIV at the time of their birth and are essentially sentenced to a life with the virus. If more and more people are being born as HIV carriers, then the spread of the virus will continue to grow at an exponential rate. When it comes to the African population that is infected with HIV and AIDS, the groups of people who are the most likely to become infected is highly disproportionate. There are more than twice as many women and girls who are carrying the virus than there are boys and men in West Africa alone; and as a whole, females make up 60% of the infected population of sub-Saharan Africa. This imbalance is due to many social and cultural factors that negatively affect the female population. The UNAIDS group describes these statistics as such: Women’s vulnerability to HIV in sub-Saharan Africa stems not only from their greater    physiology susceptibility to heterosexual transmission, but also to the severe social, legal   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   and economic disadvantages they often confront. A recent comprehensive   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   epidemiological review†¦ in Lesotho found that sexual and physical violence is a key   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   determinant of the country’s severe HIV epidemic. According to a recent survey, 47% of   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   men and 40% of women in Lesotho say women have no rights to refuse sex with their   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   husbands or boyfriends. (UNAIDS 2010) It is not only a lack of awareness and education that has attributed to the spread of HIV, but also the lack of female rights in certain sub-Saharan African countries. Rape statistics are relatively high, with both grown women and young girls being the victims of these crimes. With relaxed laws failing to protect women from male sex offenders, it is clear why there are so many more women than men who become infected with HIV. The prevalence of female and child prostitution and sex trafficking also contributes greatly to the spread of the virus. It is a combination of a lack of sex education, women’s rights, and general safety that are causing the steady increase of the HIV-positive population along with spikes in the African mortality rates; and these are all issues that medicine alone cannot address. South Africa is currently one of the most HIV-infested countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2009, approximately 5.7 million people were living with the HIV virus, with the majority of these people being female (Avert 2010). In order to combat these figures and the further spread of HIV, â€Å"†¦the South African Government launched a major counseling and testing campaign (HCT) in 2010. By raising awareness of HIV the campaign aims to reduce the HIV incidence rate by 50% by June 2011† (Avert 2010). First, earlier testing is now being offered to pregnant women who have already tested positive for HIV in order to determine whether or not the virus has been passed on to their child. More importantly, are the measures the South African government have taken in order to spread AIDS awareness. The government has funded everything from different from commercials, to door-to-door campaigning, to public speakers and free HIV tests. Many surveys have proven that these campaigns have been well-received by certain age groups. More than 75% of South African between the ages of 15-24 years old, for example, reported having seen at least one of the campaigns; but the as age increases, the percentage of people who have heard messages of AIDS awareness tends to decline (Avert 2010). This is most likely due to the majority of these campaigns targeting individuals of the younger generations– those who may not yet be sexually active, and those who are young enough to make early decisions that will protect them in the future. Although the awareness of HIV and AIDS has grown, people are not necessarily aware of how to prevent the virus from being transmitted and spread. The South African government has therefore been distributing hundreds of millions of male and female condoms among people, educating them on how to properly use this form of contraception and how condoms offer protection from sexually transmitted diseases. Studies show that condoms are mostly used by teenagers and young adults, which accounts for the decrease in the percentage of young people with HIV over the past few years. Overall, approximately 62% of people in South Africa habitually used condoms during sex in 2008, which is a dramatic improvement from the 27% figure back in 2002 (Avert 2010). As an additional form of HIV and AIDS prevention, clinics have begun to offer male circumcisions, as it was found that the procedure decreases one’s chances of contracting the virus by 60%. â€Å"It was estimated that a program with full coverage of male circumcision could prevent half a million infections and 100,000 deaths within a decade, with these figures rising in the decades to follow† (Avert 2010). This shows how the South African government has targeted HIV from a preventative standpoint, focusing on younger generations and measures such as condoms and male circumcision in order to educate the country about the virus and how it can be spread. Along with attacking the AIDS epidemic by increasing awareness and education, Nigeria has also taken a stand against the spread of HIV by addressing the political problems behind it. As part of the UNAIDS group, the country has released a progress report summarizing the actions that the government has taken in regards to the virus. The Nigerian government states: Nigeria has [formed] the Global Coalition of Woman and AIDS by establishing and   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   inaugurating National Action for Women Coalition and AIDS†¦ NAWOCA addresses   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   the vulnerability of girls, women and children through increase access to information and   Ã‚   education on prevention, treatment, care and support for HIV and reproductive heath   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   services. (UNAIDS 2010) This is a prime example of how HIV can be targeted from several directions that can all contribute to the future health of the African people. Nigeria has also increased its budget regarding HIV education, testing, and the funding of groups such as the NAWOCA in order to further their progress in decreasing the annual number of new infections. One important aspect of AIDS that should be recognized is that it is not only the disease itself that threatens the sub-Saharan African population. People typically consider AIDS to be a product of infectious diseases when, in reality, it is also the product of risky behavior (Green 2003: 57). If people are having unprotected sex on a regular basis, for example, they are automatically putting themselves at risk of contracting HIV or any other sexually transmitted disease. Being more aware of what these diseases are will not necessarily prevent them from ever being infected– educating them on how to alter their behavior and practice safe sex habits, however, will. Educating Africans about safe sex is just as important has teaching them about AIDS awareness or the dangers of the HIV virus; but in Africa, this is not always an easy task. Many schools are still uneasy about discussing safe sex and diseases, because some believe the topic to be inappropriate. Some students also feel very uncomfortable when talking about this subject with adults or peers. Still, it is obvious that the benefits of safe sex education far outweighs the risks of not knowing about it at all. Rather than focusing on the so-called taboo nature of the topic and how uncomfortable some may feel, schools all over Africa must make a collaborative effort to be diligent and thorough in what they teach their students (Onyancha 2009: 86). Multiracial Latinos suffer constantly not only by the ethnic groups they are a product of but also by their non related mono-racial counterparts which hinders a multiracial individual from having a positive and prideful self perception of his or her identity due to discriminatory actions posed against multiracial Latino individuals and because of unchanging world constructs on race. One of the conflicting challenges that mixed race Latinos struggle with is discrimination. A more prevalent form of discrimination that is dealt with among multi -racial’s is social invalidation and alienation among cultural or ethnic groups that may or may not be related to the multiracial individual. Due to the fact that multiracial individuals â€Å" have less access to multiracial family and friends and thus have less social support or guidance on race related obstacles† (Francis, Kimberly), it makes it difficult for them to closely identify with anyone, share experiences and such. They are somewhat alienated from the mono racial loop and feel pushed to pick a side so that they will have somewhere to belong and not suffer through taunts and criticisms as much as before. It’s also very hard to carry pride in their multiracial identity because so far it’s just a few people standing alone for this cause, they are rejected by their common groups and there’s not really a backbone to support the multiracial identity which entails why there are no unions, no organizations, no categories, no nothing to represent multi racials . It’s as though multiracial people are non existent and are forced to rely on only themselves when it comes to racial issues. Mono racials often have immediate families and friends that they similarly identify with culturally and ethnically. Its just overall easier to feel a part of the gang when your mono racial and when your multiracial it’s kind of the opposite, there is no such thing as an in between group, so your practically stuck on your own. In various situations individuals may be unable to assert their preferred identity (i. e. biracial or multiracial) and, instead, feel forced to use the options provided to them, describing themselves exclusively as Asian, Black, Latino, Native American, or White(Hall,1992)†. Basically they feel a push and pull between groups and tend to lean towards the group that is most similar to them in physical characteristics and of course the group that most welcomes them making them feel the need to dial down an ethnic part of t hemselves. That truly affects ones ability to fully grasp what he or she is because they are drawn and labeled exclusively to one group. Their self perception completely changes because now they are defined by society and are squeezed back in to social constructs of a single race/ethnicity. Peer pressures and family pressures are definitely big influencers on identifying as single race instead of what the person actually is, a full multiracial being. For example for an individual of black and Hispanic heritage , in a school setting of all blacks or all Hispanics , the mixed race individual would find it more preferable to identify with the dominant category to be looked upon in a better light, more normal then disclosing his/her mixed identity. Many mixed race individuals have the privilege of being able to pass for a single race but those who do not, suffer alienation and social invalidity from other groups . That doesn’t mean that multi racials can’t gain a lot of experience and appreciation for an ethnicity or race that is applied to them but they will never be labeled by it in society. Take Barack Obama for example, his environment consisted of mainly whites raising him and he was practically raised with white ideals and morals which enabled him to live the life of a white man even though to society he was labeled as Black and not White. All in all there is a feeling of isolation towards mixed race Latinos and a sort of push for them to choose one race over another even though they may not be welcomed by either. Their constantly pulled in a direction in which to showcase what they really are ethnically, even though they belong to two contrasting racial groups . The next issue in reference to discrimination is immigrant discrimination towards mixed race Latinos. In the last 10 years immigration has become a significant problem in the USA with main targets, Hispanics, due to their close proximity borders and high incoming population here in the states. Many Mono racial Latinos face constant discrimination from either coming from a family of illegal immigrants or they themselves being perceived as undocumented individuals. It’s been proven that â€Å"Current models of Anglos’ (ethnic majority group members’) attitudes toward Latinos and Latino immigrants typically derive directly from models of White–Black relations in the United States(Whaley,2006)† which shows how if attitudes from anglos toward the Latino minority groups emerge from racial perceptions of blacks then those same set ideals could be easily used against mixed race Latinos as well . In a study conducted on the differences of how Anglo Americans and Hispanics were treated during a shopping experience showed that â€Å"Overall, Latino individuals were treated differently than Anglo individuals on both measures of bias. Despite the fact that all of the stores included in the study were offered $10 gift certificates, logistical regression analysis revealed that salespeople quoted a minimum dollar amount higher than $10 more frequently for Latino than for White individuals. Salespeople also asked for identification more frequently from Latinos then Whites (Dovidio and Gartner ,2004). This goes to show how maybe there isn’t blatant discrimination demonstrated by refusing service to latinos or mixed race Latinos but that there is a subtle yet noticeable divide when it comes to preconceived notions about this particular minority group and mixed race individuals who carry a part of that with them. For the mixed race Latino who identifies more with his/her Hispani c side , it poses difficulties in escaping those sorts of perceptions and makes them reevaluate whether or not labeling themselves as Hispanic is such a great idea.

Movie Analysis : North Country Paper The movie North Country was based on the book †Class Action: The Landmark Case That Changed Sexual Harassment Law† which tells the story of Lois Jenson, who filed the first class action lawsuit for sexual harassment in American history. When Josey leaves an abusive husband and moves back to her hometown into her parents’ house, she was not welcomed. But even her father Hank expresses his displeasure to women working in the mines, because it’s not â€Å"women’s work†. He also blames Josey of taking away a job from a man on whom a whole family is dependent. But Hank fails to notice that his daughter too has a family to support. Even the women in the community believe there’s something wrong if she can’t find a man to take care of her. This is as truer in the 21st century as it was true during the century before. What had decreased is the prevalence and institutionalization of such attitudes and beliefs. Like the court’s decisions on civil rights, it didn’t change everything overnight. Affirmative action was enforced in the Iron Range as late as 1974, when the government finally ordered the steel companies to reserve 20% of their jobs to women and minorities. (Ronning) When Josie takes up a traditional women’s job of a hairdresser, she could earn only a sixth of what she will eventually earn as a miner. This shows the disparity in wages between the two sexes. Women generally don’t get paid as much as men for the same amount of work they do. Another disparity is in the composition of the work force in the mines. Men outnumber women 29 to 1, which is highly disproportionate to the actual population figures. Yet, the ones who do make it through and got the job cannot consider themselves lucky as they were subject to all kinds of sexual harassment by their male co-workers for no fault of theirs. The other women miners are hard-working survivors who tolerate the obscenity and worse, and keep silent because they cannot afford to lose their jobs in trying to make a point (Rosen). During the period when the movie was set, Anita Hill was shown testifying against Clarence Thomas for sexual harassment. What this signifies is the permeation of such beliefs and practices across all layers of the society, including the political offices. The movie showcases the approach and expansion of a legal frontier (Rosen). In the male dominated work environment of the mine, picking on women is all in a day’s work. A woman operates a piece of heavy machinery unaware that a sign is painted on it advertising sex for sale. They find obscenities written in excrement on the walls of their locker room. When finally the union decides to ask for portable toilets for the women, one of the first women to use one has it turned over while she’s inside. Add to that other sorts of touching and fondling, but if a woman is going to insist on having breasts, how can a guy be blamed for copping a feel, goes the logic. It is assumed and widely gossiped that Josey is a tramp, and she is advised to â€Å"spend less time stirring up your female co-workers and less time in the beds of your male coworkers.† (Ronning) The patriarchal nature of the American society in the 20th century is evident from the fact that the retired judge named special master to oversee the trial and to decide the compensation amount to the women, had his own biases. He held traditional beliefs and had a history of sexual misconduct. It was also reported that he frequently fell asleep during the testimony and seemed to enjoy the narrations of harassment when awake. Eveleth Mines’ lead counsel during this phase was a woman, and yet she verbally assaulted the plaintiffs to get the damages reduced. Her strategy involved proving that the harassment was the making of the women themselves due to their provocative behavior towards male coworkers and the plaintiffs were dishonest about the severity and the psychological effects. What this shows is the degree to which women themselves were inculcated to believe in their unquestioning subordination to men (Mishkind 147). Overall, Lois and the other women went through three humiliating trials where their character and personal lives were assaulted over and over again by Eveleth’s lawyers. In addition, they endured the torturous process of litigation, and further torment of the federal court system. The appeals court Judge Donald Lay wrote, â€Å"It should be obvious that the callous pattern and practice of sexual harassment engaged in by Eveleth Mines inevitably destroyed the self-esteem of the working women exposed to it. The emotional harm, brought about by this record of human indecency, sought to destroy the human psyche as well as the human spirit of each plaintiff. The humiliation and degradation suffered by these women is irreparable. Although money damage cannot make these women whole or even begin to repair the injury done, it can serve to set a precedent that in the environment of the working place such hostility will not be tolerated.† (Belton) The status and rights of women during the last century was largely only in paper. Only when Anita Hill testified against Clarence Thomas in October l991, did the United States finally wake up to the reality of sexual harassment. Before that landmark event, few people knew what to call such persistent predatory behavior as it was accepted the norm. If women needed to earn a living, they were expected to grit it out and take it. The idea that sexual harassment could be viewed as a violation of a woman’s civil rights and her ability to earn a living was very slow to catch up with the public (Mishkind 142). The much more fair and balanced sexual harassment policies that we see in corporations and educational institutions today owe in large part, to Lori Benson’s determination to put an end to some of the most shameful sexual harassment ever described in print. Although she had to wait for another 10 years to achieve justice, the suit eventually became the cornerstone of modern sexual harassment law. The much liberated women of the 21st century enjoy their freedom and security due to the perseverance and patience of these women (Belton). But how can you make sure you get your money’s worth out of the book – and make sure you actually study well enough to improve your ACT composite? Read our guide to using The Real ACT Prep Guide to find out. What’s in The Real ACT Prep Guide? The Prep Guide has two main components: an overview of each section of the ACT (English, Math, Reading, Science, and optional essay) and 5 full-length practice tests. The book is made by the ACT, so the practice tests are the best-quality ones you can get, which is why the book is so popular (at the time of writing, it’s the #1 best-selling ACT Test Guide on Amazon.com). This book can be an excellent resource if you’re trying to improve your ACT score. However, there are ways to use it effectively and less effectively – we’ll show you how. How to Use the Content Overview Section The Real ACT Prep Guide contains a brief overview of each section on the ACT and the content you need to know for each. However, it doesn’t teach you the content. For example, it will say you need to know basic trigonometric identities for the math section and give an example problem, but it won’t explain what those identities are. So if there is a concept you don’t know, The Real ACT Prep Guide won’t help you learn it. Still, we advise you read through the content review so you know what you are being tested on. If you come across content areas you’re fuzzy on – whether that’s plane geometry or grammar rules – you’ll need to find a more specific prep book or source to help you actually learn it. Make a list of content areas (if any) that you’re shaky on as your read through the content review, and seek out other resources (like more specific prep books and websites) to learn them before embarking on the practice tests. How to Use the 5 ACT Practice Tests These five practice tests are the main reason people go for The Real ACT Prep Guide. Since the tests are written by the test-makers themselves, they give you some of the best quality practice for the ACT you can get. However, if you go through the tests without a strategy, or without adequately checking your answers, you’ll waste them. Taking the tests alone will not help you get a higher ACT score. Point improvements can only come if you identify your weaknesses and drill them until they’re gone. By "perfect practice," we don't mean you should already be getting perfect scores on your practice tests. We mean treating the practice tests like real ones, and then taking adequate time to correct them and understand your mistakes. With that in mind, here’s how to make the most of the practice tests. Timing If you tend to run out of time on ACT sections, you can experiment with giving yourself time and a half, time and a quarter, and then strict timing on the practice tests, to build up your speed. (If you ever run out of time on a section, by the way, still answer the rest of the questions after you’re done with the test to maximize your knowledge-building.) In any case, be careful to time yourself strictly for each practice test, even if you’re starting with time-and-a-half. You’ll be the most prepared for the ACT if you’re able to deal with both the pacing and content. Wear a watch when you practice so you can get use to monitoring your time per question. You won’t be able to bring your phone with you to the test, so get used to using a more old-fashioned timer. Read more about ACT timing for more tips on timing (including the approximate time you have for each question). Stamina If you’re worried about getting through the whole test with enough energy and focus, make sure to take at least some of the practice tests in full blocks, as if you were taking the real ACT, with strict timing throughout. This will help you build your stamina so that on test day, you will have just as much energy on the Science section (which comes last) as you do on the English section (which comes first). If you have no problem with getting through long tests, and you have one particular section giving you trouble, you could focus on just that section and drill it. For example, say that you consistently score 32 and higher when you practice English, Reading, and Science, but are struggling to break 28 on the Math section. You may want to do more practice Math sections to make up for the discrepancy. However, keep in mind any time you take a section by itself, you won’t be able to use that practice test for a complete run-through. Don’t break up all five of the practice tests into their sections. Keep at least two for full run-throughs. Checking Answers When checking the answers on your practice tests, don’t just correct your multiple-choice sheet, tally a score, and wait to see improvement. Rushing through the tests won’t help you get any better. If you correct your practice tests like a Scantron, and only tally up right and wrong answers without further analysis, you're wasting your time. First of all, as you move through the test, mark any questions you are unsure about. This way, even if you get them right, you can examine why they were right and what prevented you from being sure. Next, look at what you got wrong. Figure out the skill, concept, or line of reasoning you didn’t have that prevented you from getting it right. For example, did you miss that reading question because you didn’t know the meaning of a word, or because you misunderstood the context of the passage? Also refer to the answer explanations the Real ACT Guide provides, but keep in mind that can be a bit shallow (â€Å"A is wrong because it is. B is right because†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ). Finally, log your mistakes in a notebook. This way you can begin to notice any patterns or consistent gaps in your knowledge. For example, when correcting the math section and logging your mistakes, you might find you missed three questions because you weren’t able to figure out plane geometry and seven questions because you made silly arithmetic errors (like forgetting a negative sign). By logging your mistakes and their causes, you will have a ready-made study guide to use in between practice tests. You can go right to the heart of your weaknesses and drill them. What To Do In Between Tests Don’t just jump from practice test to practice test without studying in between. That would be like a marathon runner jogging 26 miles every day instead of training in intervals – they would horribly injure themselves and not improve at all. While you likely won’t injure yourself from taking five ACT practice tests in a row (though your hand may cramp up pretty badly), you will lose the opportunity to learn from your mistakes and improve. Using your notebook of mistakes, go back to your other resources – the Real ACT content guide chapters, other prep books, the internet – to learn content you still don’t know and practice specific problems. This is also the time to develop and try new strategies. For example, say you keep running out of time on Science because you read the passages first then go to the questions. You might test out starting with the questions and seeing if that improves your time while maintaining accuracy while working through smaller blocks of practice problems. Only once you’re feeling confident about your progress should you attempt the next practice test. The Study Regimen You Should Follow By following the principles above, you can make the most out of the practice tests in The Real ACT Prep Guide. But you may be asking how often you should take practice tests, and what your study schedule should be like. We suggest, before you start studying, you take a full-length practice test. From your performance, figure out your weaknesses in each section. Find resources to improve your weaknesses, and also read through The Real ACT Prep Guide's content review. Depending on when your ACT test date is, take another practice test after two or three weeks of studying. This way you can give yourself adequate time to study and improve. Carefully analyze the results of your second practice test to see where you still need work. You can repeat this process as many times as you need. As you get closer to the test and you correct more of your weaknesses, you can shorten your time between practice tests. Keep studying until you feel confident you will hit your target score on test day. What Happens If I Run Out of Practice Tests? Unlike the SAT’s Official Guide, which has 10 (!) practice tests, ACT only gives you five in The Real ACT Prep Guide. For many students, this is more than enough. Sexual harassment in the work place

Sexual harassment in the work place Sexual Harassment in the Work Place The Clarence Thomas Supreme Court case confirmation hearings in 1991 were the first to bring the issue of sexual harassment into increased standing. Anita Hill, a former employee of Thomas, alleged that he had sexually harassed her while she was working under his supervision. Although the allegations where never sustained, the hearing made many people more aware of how often employees are sexually harassed in the work place. This, combined with other events lead to a tremendous increase in the number of sexual harassment complaints bring filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (Chapter 3, 123). In addition to the early allegations, there have been more recent incidents that have brought more attention to sexual harassment in the workplace. One major incident took place after President Clinton took office and faced a sexual harassment lawsuit by Paula Corbin Jones. Jones alleged that Clinton sexual harassed her during a business trip in a Little Rock hotel room. This caused the number of sexual harassment complaints to jump in number, again, between 1993 and 1994. However, the number of cases filed has decreased substantially since 2000 (Chapter 3, 123). There are two specific legal definitions of sexual harassment that have been established in employment law. Quid Pro Quo Harassment; this is transferred into â€Å"something for something,† or â€Å"you do something for me and Ill do something for you† (Sexual Harassment, 2009). This happens when unwelcome sexual advances are expected in exchange for certain job benefits. An example of this would be an employee being offered a raise or a promotion if they go out on a date with the particular supervisor. This also happens when an employee makes a decision, or provides or withholds certain opportunities based on another employees submission to verbal, non verbal or physical conduct (Sexual Harassment, 2009). Quid pro quo harassment is just as unlawful whether the victim resists and suffers the threatened harm or submits to avoid the harm (Sexual Harassment, 2009). The Bundy v. Jackson case illustrates quid for quo sexual harassment. Bundy was a personnel clerk with District of Columbia Department of Corrections. She received repeated sexual propositions from Delbert Jackson, who was currently another employee when this happened. He later became the director of the agency. After this she began to receive propositions from two of her supervisors. She took the issue to their supervisor, Lawrence Swain, who dismissed her complaints; telling her that â€Å"any man in his right mind would want to rape you,† then proceeded to ask her to begin a sexual relationship with him (Chapter 3, 123). When Bundy was eligible for a promotion, she was passed over because of her â€Å"inadequate work performance,† although she had never been told that her work performance was unsatisfactory (Chapter 3, 123). The second definition is Hostile Environment Sexual Harassment. This happens when an employee is â€Å"subjected to comments of sexual nature, offensive sexual materials, or unwelcomed physical contact as a regular part of the work environment† (Chapter 3, 123). Normally if this were to happen once it would not be considered hostile environment harassment unless it is extremely outrageous conduct. Under this definition the courts look to see whether the conduct is both serious and frequent. Supervisors, managers, co-workers and even customers can create a hostile environment (Chapter 3, 123). These types of behaviors are also covered under Title VII because they treat individuals differently based on their sex. Also, although most harassment cases involve male on female harassment, any individual can be harassed. For example, male employees at Jenny Craig alleged that they were sexually harassed, and a federal jury found that a male employee had been sexually harassed by his male boss (Chapter 3, 123). In addition, Ron Clark Ford of Amarillo, Texas, recently agreed to pay 140,000 dollars to six male plaintiffs who alleged that they and others were subjected to a sexually hostile work environment and treated differently because of their gender by male managers (Chapter 3, 123). There are three critical issues when dealing with sexual harassment cases. First, the plaintiff cannot have â€Å"invited or incited† the advances (Chapter 3, 123). Most of the time the plaintiffs sexual history, whether she or he wear provocative clothing, and whether she or he engages in sexually explicit conversations are used to prove or disprove that the advance was unwelcome (Elements, 648). The second critical issue if that the harassment must have been severe enough to alter the â€Å"terms conditions and privileges of the employment† (Chapter 3, 123). Many courts have used the â€Å"reasonable woman† standard in determining the severity or pervasiveness of the harassment (Elements, 648). This consists of assessing whether a reasonable woman, faced with the same situation, would have reacted similarly. This recognizes that behavior that might be considered appropriate by a man may not be considered appropriate by a woman (Elements, 648). The third issue is that the courts must determine whether the organization is liable for the actions of it employees. To determine this, the courts normally examine two things. First, did the employer know about the harassment? Second, did the employer do anything to stop this behavior? Normally if the employer knew about the actions and didnt do anything to stop them then the court would find the employer guilty of not appropriately stopping the harassment (Elements, 648). The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) describes sexual harassment as a â€Å"form of gender discrimination that is in violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act† (Abdulaziz, S. 2009). In 1998, the US Supreme Court made employers more liable for sexual harassment of their employees. Since then, the Society for Human Resource Management has reported that 62 percent of companies now offer sexual harassment prevention training programs, and 97 percent have a written sexual harassment policy (Abdulaziz, S. 2009). The number of cases filed with the EEOC has gradually decreased. In 1997, close to 16,000 charges were filled. Ten years later in 2007, only 12,510 were filed. â€Å"A telephone poll done by Louis Harris and Associates on 782 US workers revealed the following statistics: 31 percent of the female workers and only 7 percent of male workers reported they had been harassed at work, 62 percent of targets took no action, 100 percent of female workers were harassed by men, where as, 59 percent of men reported the harasser was a woman and 41 percent said the harasser was another man† (Elements, 648). Remedies for sexual harassment depend on the severity of sexual harassment complaints and findings of the investigator, as well as, the situation. When the person lost an employment opportunity the following could happen: hiring the person for the job or opportunity lost, providing the person with the opportunity with he or she missed to the extent possible, and providing financial compensation for the lost opportunity (Discrimination, 2009). If the person has lost wages the following could happen: all or part of the lost wages or salary would be compensated, lost pension or other benefits would be compensated, lost raises, overtime, shift bonuses, or higher rates of pay which should have been earned by promotion would be compensated, and any lost wages or benefits which can reasonably be linked to the act of sexual harassment would be compensated (Discrimination, 2009). Typically all expenses attributed to the enforcement of the persons rights can be compensated. Such expenses include: medical expenses, such as psychological care, travel expenses for attending physician, preparation of reports and costs of experts attendance at a trial, travel costs to attend a hearing, and wages and/or tips lost as a result of attending a hearing (Discrimination, 2009). Sexual harassment in a work place is any form of unwanted or unwelcomed behavior, or attention of a sexual nature that interferes with your ability to function at work. It is also, largely a form of gender discrimination that is covered under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (Sexual Harassment, 2009).There are many cases that have resulted from sexual harassment and many different forms of remedies of such harassment takes place.

How do you think it looks: you all the time in a man’s room?† (2,4). For a mother, trying to get through to her daughter is a very frustrating task. It’s hard for Chizuko to show Aki that all her frustration is in the best interest for her: â€Å"CHIZUKO: I have lots to worry about. I got to see you have enough to eat, give you an education, see you’re dressed decent-so people won’t say, â€Å"Those kids don’t have a father.† See you’re not left with debts, like what happened to me. See you don’t make a mess (of) ...† (2,4). Chizuko is trying to protect her young daughter, she is afraid that Aki is going to get hurt if she pours all her emotions towards this grown man, by Aki not understanding this Chizuko becomes angry: â€Å"CHIZUKO: I know you don’t care ... right now. I’m just saying you shouldn’t let your emotions run away with you† (2,4). Chizuko feels that Aki should be spending time with kids her age: â€Å"CHIZUKO: If you want a friend to talk to, find someone your age who can understand you...

A video game is an electronic game that involves human interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device. The word videoin video game traditionally referred to cathode ray tube (CRT) display device, but it now implies any type of display device that can produce two or three dimensional images. The electronic systems used to play video games are known as platforms; examples of these are personal computers and video game consoles .These platforms range from large mainframe computers to small handheld devices. Specialized video games such as arcade games, while previously common, have gradually declined in use. Video games have gone on to become an art form and industry. The input device used to manipulate video games is called a game controller, and varies across platforms. For example, a controller might consist of only a button and a joystick, while another may feature a dozen buttons and one or more joysticks. Early personal computer games often needed a keyboard for game play, or more commonly, required the user to buy a separate joystick with at least one button. Many modern computer games allow or require the player to use a keyboard and a mouse simultaneously. A few of the most common game controllers are gamepads, mouse’s, keyboards, and joysticks. These distinctions are not always clear and there may be games that bridge one or more platforms. In addition to personal computers, there are multiple other devices which have the ability to play games but are not dedicated video game machines, such as mobile phones, PDAs and graphing calculators. Adoption for same sex couples is a very controversial topic in Family Law, and often same sex couples face many unique issues if they wish to adopt. Many states have different laws that apply for gay and lesbian adoption, as opposed to heterosexual couples. Several states also have special rules that apply when a child is born into a gay or lesbian partnership. Gay and lesbian couples may sometimes opt to bring a child into their lives through conception and birth as well. For a lesbian couple, this is usually done through a male donor or a sperm bank and having one of the couple become pregnant. Similarly, gay men may use a surrogate mother and then become a legal parent through adoption. The other parent then can become a legal second parent through stepparent or second parent adoption. However, many states including Virginia don’t allow second parent adoption. The definition of a legal ‘parent’ is (n.) the lawful and natural father or mother of a person. The word does not mean grandparent or ancestor, but can include an adoptive parent as a replacement for a natural parent. Adoption laws vary from state to state, and there are some states that do allow lesbian and gay couples to adopt children as legal, joint parents. Gay and lesbian couples in these states can go through adoption agencies in order to adopt, personally arrange their adoption, or even adopt internationally. In many states, however, stepparent, second parent or even joint adoption is not an option for gay and lesbian couples. Given that this involves the upbringing of human beings who are the future of our society, it is extremely important to make sure that they are given the best care and best influences in their lives in order to make good moral and educated decisions in their future lives. Same sex parenting may not be as bad as society has made it seem but it absolutely has to be socially and scientifically proven before any more steps are taken in this matter because, after all, it is in the â€Å"best interest of the child.†

Hitler Fell...   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many aspects of World War Two have been the cause for debate for many years. Not only has the loss of Germany been discussed at great lengths, also have the reasons. It can be said that although much thought and fact has been taken into consideration when discussing Germany's loss as a whole; not as much attention has been given to that of the loss of Hitler as a man and a leader. Germany's loss of World War Two was not only a loss on behalf of the country as a whole, but a personal loss to Hitler. Why was this such a loss to Hitler? Why did he experience a personal downfall? How did he create his own demise? There are many reasons as to why this is so, but the fact that his ideas were behind the war is a reason why it was not only Germany's downfall, but Hitler's also. He was a man of influence in Germany; the timing was right, and he was in the hot spot. He was the leader of a highly populated European country, he wanted more for himself and for his people. He h ad ideas, he made decisions based on them. What were his ideas? What was behind them, what did he intend them to accomplish? Where did they lead, and how did this lead to a countrywide and worldwide loss, and even a personal loss? In discussing some of Hitler's ideas such as, lebensraum (which ties in with treaty issues), purity of the state of Germany and a zeal for his people and the desire to make changes for the betterment of his country; it will be seen that although his ideas might have been initally pure, they led to the war, the downfall of Germany and ultimately Hitler's own personal demise.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  What were his ideas? What were his visions for a more pure Germany? What did he want for his people, for himself? Firstly, today, Hitler is seen as a white supremacist. He wanted all of Germany to be pure. Why was this so? In Germany at the time, the economic status of the country was not very good. Hitler saw the Jews as to be shrewd business people who were taking advantage of the poor German economic situation. They were convincing the lay German people to sell their land (which was all they had) for the German Deutsch mark, which was virtually worthless.
